Position: Director of Music
St. Luke Church is an historic Episcopal Church in downtown Renton with open hospitality and a progressive, intergenerational, and multicultural spirit. We come from many cultures and life experiences with music being one of the primary modes of expressing difference and unity. Our congregation worships together in English and Spanish. The Director of Music needs some familiarity with Spanish language and music to assist us on this growing adventure.
Description: The Director of Music facilitates our music program by playing/singing, rehearsing and directing the choir and other musicians, planning music in coordination with the rector, supporting our quarterly seasonal liturgies, and overseeing our “Kid’s Music” program.
Skills: The Director will have experience of, and innate affinity for a wide range of church music and genres, including gospel, African American, Latin American, Native American, well as classical Anglican and popular music, and be enthusiast about learning and leading new expressions of church music. An ability to provide vocal leadership is expected as well as keyboard and/or other instrument skills.
Our Team: Our music program includes a professional trombonist and guitarist (acoustic & electric), three choir section leaders, and 20 member volunteer choir. Several other accomplished musicians in the congregation enjoy occasional participation. Currently, one of our section leaders doubles as leader of the Kid’s Music Program.
Our Services: St. Luke Church’s musicians lead congregational music on Sundays at 10:30 am. One Sunday per month, we devote to young people in music leadership where youth players weave with professional musicians. We provide evening services four times per year at the change of seasons that draws upon a wide use of church and popular music forming a sacred blend. We celebrate occasional holy days throughout the year.
Our Instruments: Allen Prestige electronic organ; the Blaise Organ, a one-of-a-kind, hand-made, one manual, meantone pipe organ; Steinway grand piano; and a multitude of string, brass, wind, and percussion instruments.
We seek a healthy-minded, positive, kind, spiritually-sensitive, professional for this crucial, pastoral role in our common life. The position demands up to 20 hours per week as well as a long-term commitment to the role. Compensation based on capacity to perform and grow in the position.
