The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. At noon and 7 p.m. on February 26, St. Luke’s will distribute ashes on the heads of participants in the Ash Wednesday service as a sign of mortality and penitence. The ashes are imposed with the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” a practice that was established in the ninth century.
